Cameroon records first case of avian influenza
12.03.2006
The H5N1 strain of avian influenza has been detected in Cameroon, making it the fourth African country to be hit by the virus.
A government statement said it had been found in a duck on a farm near the northern town of Maroua, on the border with Nigeria.
H5N1 had previously been detected in poultry in Nigeria itself, Niger and also in Egypt.
Cameroon banned all imports of Nigerian poultry last month.
The tests from the farm near Maroua had been carried out in Paris, the Cameroonian government statement said.
