French egg producers oppose imports from Ukraine

The French Egg Producers Association has issued a strong warning regarding the import of eggs from Ukraine, claiming that these products do not comply with European regulatory standards. In particular, the association highlights that the eggs bear the code 3, which indicates that they come from hens kept in battery cages, a production method regarded within the European Union as incompatible with required welfare standards. Producers further contend that recent consignments of Ukrainian eggs imported into Europe were found to contain residues of prohibited antibiotics.
Since spring, shipments of eggs from Ukraine have been identified in several major retail chains, sparking outrage despite the still relatively limited scale of imports. However, there is serious concern that their low prices may incentivize a significant increase in imports, thereby severely undermining the ability of local producers to compete fairly. French producers, who are bound by stringent requirements, including the use of chick sexing technologies at the earliest stage of incubation (Ovosexing), express indignation that Ukrainian imports face no obligation to comply with the same standards, creating a clear market distortion to their detriment.
