Professor Hafez is head of the Institute of Poultry Diseases at the Free University in Berlin, gained his Master of Veterinary Science at the department of Poultry Diseases from Cairo University in 1975 and in 1981 completed his DVM at the Department of Poultry Diseases, Giessen University, Germany.

In 1994 he finished the Habilitation thesis at the Department of Poultry Diseases in Munich University, Germany. Professor Hafez is Veterinary Poultry Specialist since 1982, Veterinary Microbiology Specialist since 1989, Veterinary Animal Hygiene Specialist since 1996, and, since 2005 European Diplomate Veterinary Public health. Dr Hafez's career has focused on poultry diseases diagnosis and control in general and in particular respiratory and food borne diseases, management, and hygiene.
