Two human cases of avian influenza reported in Egypt

Two women in Egypt have tested positive for a lethal strain of avian influenza. The UN health agency said a 50-year-old woman was hospitalized with the H5N1 strain of the disease on Dec. 24 and is in critical condition. A 22-year-old female chicken seller from Menofia Governorate infected with the same strain was hospitalized Dec. 26 and is recovering in intensive care.

Avian Influenza claims human victim in Vietnam

Vietnam confirmed yesterday that avian influenza has killed a 4-year-old boy from a northern province. The boy died at the Paediatrics Hospital in Hanoi on December 16, five days after he was admitted to a hospital in Son La province, 320km north-west of Hanoi. The boy was transferred to the hospital in Hanoi on December 14 after his symptoms were identified similar to avian influenza.

Pakistan: First Avian influenza human case confirmed by the WHO

The first case of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza has been confirmed in Pakistan. Laboratory tests conducted by the WHO H5 Reference Laboratory in Cairo, Egypt and WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Influenza, in London, United Kingdom have confirmed the presence of avian influenza virus strain A(H5N1) in samples collected from one case in an affected family. Additional laboratory analysis, including gene sequencing, is ongoing.

New avian influenza case reported in Germany

Germany has found a new case of avian influenza in a small poultry farm in the northeastern state of Brandenburg. This is the third case of avian influenza in ten days in Germany. The H5N1 virus was detected among 15 chickens in the poultry farm in Brandenburg, which surrounds the German capital Berlin.

Australia: Raw eggs linked to salmonella outbreak

Improper use of raw eggs has been blamed for 50 cases of food poisoning in New South Wales (NSW) in the past three weeks. A group of 35 people fell ill, probably from salmonella, after eating homemade fried icecream with a coating made of raw egg batter at a party. There were also 11 cases from another gathering where raw egg was used in caesar salad dressing and chocolate mousse.

Laboratory tests have confirmed a fresh outbreak of deadly H5N1 avian influenza in the same area of northern Poland where the virus was discovered earlier this month. Eight cases of avian influenza among people have been confirmed in Pakistan, the first such cases in the country. Wild heron in Hong Kong has tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, prompting authorities to close a bird reserve on the border with China. Saudi Arabia's agriculture ministry has ordered 13,500 ostriches to be destroyed following a new outbreak of avian influenza in the kingdom. The birds arrived on 31 October at the show’s premises and were inspected for the contest on 1 November. In the following days, the show was open to the public. According to the organisation committee, about 200 people, mainly members of bird societies in the region of Nijmegen and their families, visited the show. First human case of Avian Influenza in Myanmar

The Ministry of Health in Myanmar has confirmed the country's first case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 7-year-old female from Kyaing Tone Township, Shan State (East). The case was detected through routine surveillance following an outbreak of H5N1 in poultry in the area in mid-November. She developed symptoms of fever and headache on 21 November 2007 and was hospitalized on 27 November. She has now recovered. Samples taken from the case tested positive for H5N1 at the National Health Laboratory in Yangon, and the National Institute of Health in Thailand. The diagnosis was further confirmed at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo, Japan.

Chinese officials said today that the father of a Chinese man who recently died of H5N1 avian influenza has been hospitalized with an H5N1 infection, raising the possibility of a new family cluster and sparking fears of human-to-human transmission. China's health ministry said the 52-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after he came down with a fever on Dec 3, according to a statement today from Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection. The man's samples were sent to the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, where tests for the H5N1 virus were positive. The man is from Nanjing in Jiangsu province in the eastern part of the country.

Poland's veterinary service has culled 4,200 turkeys following an outbreak of deadly H5N1 avian influenza on two poultry farms northwest of Warsaw. In late August 2007, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (HPAIV) of subtype H5N1 was reported in a large duck farm in Wachenroth, in the county Erlangen-Höchstadt, state of Bavaria, in Southern Germany (index farm). Daily mortality among ducklings was approximately 2% and the presence of HPAIV H5N1 was confirmed in several samples. Protection and observation zones were installed according to German legislation, and over 165,000 animals were subsequently culled. The epidemiological contact investigation of the flocks led to the identification of H5 infection of ducks in two other farms in the nearby county of Schwandorf (contact farms 1 and 2). The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health in Germany, confirmed the presence of the Asian lineage of HPAIV H5N1. Culling of another 205,000 ducks was started at these two sites on 7 September, exactly two weeks after the first outbreak.

Defra has today published the initial epidemiology report into the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Suffolk. The report concludes that, at the time of writing, the outbreak is confined to the index case which is also the first case and a secondary case as a result of transmission by vehicles, people or other things on the sites. It has not been possible, at this stage, to categorically identify the source of the outbreak. This initial report states that no evidence has so far been found to indicate introduction via infected poultry or poultry products or vehicles/people transporting them, from countries which have undisclosed infection in their domestic turkey, geese and duck population.

Romania: Avian Influenza found in Danube Delta

Avian Influenza was detected on a small farm in Romania's eastern Danube Delta, leading authorities to slaughter 90 hens and ducks to prevent the disease from spreading. Preliminary tests on 15 birds that died at the farm showed they were infected with the H5 subtype of Avian Influenza. No quarantine has been imposed around the farm, located in Murighiol, a delta village some 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of the capital, Bucharest.

Hong Kong finds egret with avian influenza in city park

A little egret found in a Hong Kong park has tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The bird was collected at the Tuen Mun Park in the New Territories on Nov. 18, the city's agriculture, fisheries and conservation department said in a brief statement. It urged Hong Kong residents to avoid personal contact with wild birds and live poultry, and to clean hands after any contact. It is not the first appearance of the disease in the territory: at least 17 infected birds were discovered in the first half of this year.

Birds in seven farms in Riyadh where the virus was detected were culled. The chickens in another three farms were also culled because the farms are situated hazardously close to the farms where the virus appeared first. According to a statement by Mohammed Zaid Al-Julaifi, director general of Animal Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture, yesterday: Birds were culled in farms in Al-Kharj, Durma, Muzamiyah Al Hayati and Al Aziziyah poultry market in Riyadh as a preventive measure.

UK: Britain announces poultry cull after new suspected avian influenza outbreak

A further 68,000 birds are being slaughtered on a fifth poultry farm in Suffolk in a bid to control the outbreak of avian influenza in the region. Defra officials say the latest cull - more than double the other five combined - is precautionary and falls within the existing surveillance zone. Saudi Arabia: Avian Influenza identified in a poultry market

A poultry market in the Aziziyah district of Riyadh was cordoned off after inspectors identified four cases of Avian Influenza there yesterday during a random inspection. An emergency team, assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture to control the virus, cordoned the market off. The team comprises officials from the police, the municipality, the ministries of health and agriculture and the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWD). “There are 85 poultry shops in this market and each will have a minimum of 1,000 birds. The team plans to cull the birds and disinfect the whole area to stop the virus from spreading,” said Soliman Al-Buthi, general manager of the Environmental Health Department at the Riyadh Municipality. He added that municipality is working with the emergency team to tackle the problem. Al-Buthi stressed that the situation is under control and called on members of the public to help the authorities tackle the problem.

UK: Avian Influenza suspected at second farm

Turkeys on a farm close to the avian influenza outbreak in Suffolk are being slaughtered on suspicion of having the disease, Defra said today. Estonia confirmed the largest outbreak of Newcastle disease in its history at an egg production facility owned by the Tallegg company about 8 kilometers due east of Tallinn in Tulli. Ago Partel, Estonia’s Chief Veterinary Officer and head of Estonia’s Food and Veterinary Board reported that 237,000 chickens and 1.65 million eggs will be destroyed at that facility and a quarantine of 10 km surrounding the facility is already in place. Financial losses will be about $2 million USD. In addition, Toivo Novandi, Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture stated that Estonia will begin mandatory Newcastle disease vaccinations. Defra has published a lessons learned report following the outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in Suffolk in February this year. The report concludes that the response to the outbreak was effective and highlights the benefits of the contingency planning work over the last six years. Disease was contained to one premises and controlled both quickly and successfully. This view was reflected by stakeholders and operational partners demonstrating their increased confidence in the Government’s contingency planning and ability to respond to a disease outbreak.

Initially, import demand for both uncooked and cooked poultry declined substantially, due to consumers’ fear of contracting avian influenza by eating poultry meat. Consumer fears adversely affected poultry consumption in many countries, leading to lower domestic prices, decreased production, and lower poultry-meat exports. These reductions proved to be short-lived, as prices, consumption, production, and exports returned to preoutbreak levels in a relatively short time. The case was diagnosed at a goose farm in Derekegyhaza, 9 km from the site of the first outbreak. The flock consisted of 6000 four week-old and 3 386 eight week-old geese. On 23 January, 6 geese died, the following day the number of deaths was 24, on 25 January – 21, on 26 January - 289. By 27 January altogether 2,596 geese died in the outbreak, the remaining 6790 geese were culled.

Hong Kong confirms dead falcon had avian influenza

The first outbreak of avian in the European Union this year was confirmed today after the EU Commission said the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain had been found in a geese breeding flock in Hungary (Farm near Lapisto, Csongrad County, southeast Hungary). South Korea says fifth avian influenza case confirmed

South Korea has discovered a fifth case of avian influenza despite the culling of poultry after earlier cases. The latest case occurred at a poultry farm (Breeding chickens) in Chonan, South Chungcheong province, around 90 km south of the capital, Seoul, and about 8 km from Asan where the fourth case was found. South Korean quarantine authorities are preparing to slaughter more than 270,000 poultry. The latest outbreak, in the centre of South Korea, is the fifth since the virus reappeared in the country in November after a three year absence.

Viruses with a genetic mutation, linked in laboratory testing to moderately reduced susceptibility to oseltamivir, have been discovered in two persons previously reported with H5N1 infections in Egypt. WHO announced that genetic sequencing had found the N294S change in the isolates (an asparagine, N, to serine, S, mutation at position 294). Both patients had been on treatment with oseltamivir for two days before the clinical samples that yielded the viruses were taken. The two patients from whom samples were taken were a 16 year-old female and a 26 year-old male from Gharbiyah Province, Egypt (The ages and dates in this update related to the two patients, may differ slightly from earlier reports, but reflect the most recent information provided to WHO). They were a niece and uncle, respectively, who lived in the same house.

Indonesia: Avian influenza infected stray cats roam the streets

At least 100 stray cats roaming the streets of major cities in Indonesia are infected with the deadly avian influenza H5N1 virus. The irony is that when tests were conducted on 500 stray cats in Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Bandung, Tangerang and Lampung, and the 100 were found to be infected, they were all released back onto the streets. Dr C.A. Nidom, head of Avian Influenza Laboratory at the University of Airlangga, said the tests were conducted on Java Island and in Lampung Province of Sumatra Island from September to December last year.

Japan confirms avian influenza case in chicken farm

The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry has confirmed the cause of the chicken death as avian influenza in the chicken farm in Miyazaki prefecture, which feeds around 12,000 chickens. S. Korea confirms human avian influenza infection

South Korea's disease control agency said it has confirmed a human infection of the avian influenza virus. The state-run Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), which conducted tests among 26 residents near four farms in the southwestern region hit by avian influenza in November and December last year, said it has discovered a person whom tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus. The person was reportedly working at one of the farms then. KCDC is testing 59 more people, including farm owners and others who worked around the three poultry farms and a quail farm. Final results are likely to come out by the end of the month. Despite the positive test results, the infected person has shown no symptoms so far.

A wild bird found dead in a shopping district in Hong Kong (Leighton Road, Causeway Bay) has tested positive for H5 avian influenza and government experts said it might have been infected by migratory birds flocking south.
