Feather
Calamus: The smooth, unpigmented base, which extends under the skin into the feather follicle.
Barb: A set of filaments, on each side of the main shaft.
Vane: Portion of the feather that has barbs.
Downy barbs: Barbs that are not hooked together at the base of the feathers.
