A recent study published in Scientific Reports highlights the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella in poultry products. Researchers analyzed isolates collected between 2020 and 2024 and identified strains carrying the blaCTX-M-65 gene, which confers resistance to important antibiotics. By analyzing 132 Salmonella isolates collected from retail poultry products between 2020 and 2024, the researchers identified 14 multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains harboring the blaCTX-M-65 gene, primarily in the serovars Infantis, I 1,4,[5],12:i:-, and Senftenberg. Whole-genome sequencing revealed evidence of clonal spread and mobile genetic elements, raising concerns about the transmission of resistance through the food chain.
