Description:

These antibiotics contain in their structure one or more orthoester linkages between carbohydrate residues; they include flambamycin, everninomycins, hygromycin and avilamycin. These compounds are produced by Streptomyces spp. and Micromonospora spp. They display a broad range of activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including glycopeptide-resistant enterococci and meticillin-resistant staphylococci, and some Gram-negative bacteria. Avilamycin is mainly active against Gram-positive bacteria, including Bacillus spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium bovis, Enterococcus spp., Lactobacillus spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. Avilamycin is intended for use as a veterinary medicine in chickens, turkeys to control bacterial enteric infections.
