Russia may ban US poultry imports
07.09.2009
The largest importer of poultry meat in Russia – the United States - in 2010 could lose the Russian market, due to new technical regulations, which are currently discussed by the Russian authorities.
According to the first Vice-Prime Minister of Russia Viktor Zubkov this regulations will be adopted very soon. He has already advised importers to have a look at the text in order to avoid unpleasant surprises in the future. The new regulations will impose a ban on the imports of poultry meat treated with a solution of chlorine, thus virtually banning all the poultry that are imported into Russia from the United States.
Most of the imported chicken come to Russia from the United States with a quota amounted to 750 thousand tonnes (with a total import quota of 952 tonnes).
