South African researchers reports an outbreak of Israeli Turkey Meningo-Encephalytis in pheasants in Pretoria.
Israel is the only country that produce a vaccine against the disease. The vaccine was developed by Prof Ianconescu, and it is an injectable live vaccine. The disease was first diagnosed by Prof Komarov in 1958 in Israel. The disease is characterised by progressive paralysis associated with meningo-encephalytis.
The South African report is a case in pheasants imported from Belgium to South Africa.
In 1978, TMEv was isolated from turkeys with clinical signs similar to Israel turkey meningoencephalitis virus in South Africa.
