Europe Ban on U.S. Chicken

European Commission will recommend that member countries lift an 11-year ban on U.S. poultry imports.
EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen said a new scientific report "does not provide a basis" for continuing the ban.
the European Commission promised to put forward a formal proposal to lift the embargo. The ban was imposed in 1997 because of the common practice in the United States of cleaning chicken carcasses with a chlorine wash.
The import ban costs U.S. poultry producers an estimated $180 million a year in lost sales.
