NAWAC has opened the Draft Code of Welfare for Broiler Chickens and submissions close on 8 November 2010. Codes of welfare advise owners or persons in charge of animals how they can comply with their obligations under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to meet the animals' physical, health and behavioural needs to alleviate pain and distress.
The draft covers all aspects of broiler chicken production, from the hatchery to transport for slaughter. It does not cover breeding, including selection for fast growth. This will be covered in a future code of welfare.
