The Food and Drug Administration published a summary report that showed about 29 million pounds (13M Kg) of antimicrobials were sold in the United States in 2009 for use in food animals.
The report was mandated by the Animal Drug User Fee Amendments of 2008 to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, so there is no comparison data available.
The annual totals listed in the report reflect all approved uses of all dosage forms (e.g. injected, oral, medicated feed) of the identified classes of actively marketed drugs in food-producing animals.
The data, showed the largest classes of antimicrobials sold to be Tetracyclines at about 4,611,892 kg (active ingredient) and Ionophores at about 3,740,627 kg.
