China: first human death from H5N6 avian influenza strain

07.05.2014

A Chinese man has died from the H5N6 strain of avian influenza, in what is believed to be the world's first case of human infection from this virus subtype.
The patient is a 49-year-old male, from Nanchong in the southwestern province of Sichuan.
The patient had been exposed to dead poultry and was initially diagnosed as having pneumonia.

A low-pathogenic H5N6 avian flu virus was detected last month in a poultry flock in Sichuan province.
