According to the Agrimoney.com website, UK poultry output is to grow by a further 1.9m birds per week by the end of 2016, taking its growth over nine years to 30%, helped by a switch from red meat. UK poultry output - which has already risen, in slaughter terms, from 14.7m birds per week at the end of 2007 to 17.2m birds per week – will hit 19.1m head by the end of 2016. The increase is being supported in part by the UK's growing population, rising by 0.7% a year and expected to reach 70m by 2030, but also by a growing place for chicken in the diet, thanks to its lower price compared with red meat, and its place a relatively healthy protein. UK sales of poultry are expected to maintain annual growth of 1.6%, rising from 738,000 tonnes this year to 778,000 tonnes in 2017.
