On 25 January 2017 the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease (NRL) confirmed as positive to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Subtype H5N8 an industrial laying hens farm in Rovigo province (Veneto region). The characterization of the virus is ongoing. Further information will be provided as soon as possible.
More than 80,000 birds have died or will be destroyed to prevent further spread of the virus.
