Authorities in Shanghai began the mass slaughter of poultry at a market after the H7N9 avian influenza virus, was confirmed in chickens and pigeons from Shanghai markets.
The live poultry trading areas of two markets were closed after separate samples showed evidence of the virus.

Shanghai authorities started banning all live poultry from other parts of the country from entering the city after temporarily closing three markets to battle the H7N9 avian influenza.
