A 4-year-old girl in China's Guangdong province is sick with an H9N2 avian influenza infection. The child, who lives in the city of Meizhou, is hospitalized in serious condition.
H9N2 viruses are found in poultry in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and human cases occur sporadically. The World Health Organization said in May that the global count of confirmed human H9N2 cases was 28, with no deaths and no cases of person-to-person transmission.
