Poultry farmers and pet shops have been reminded to take precautions against avian influenza after preliminary tests found that a dead Oriental magpie robin discovered in Hung Hom on April 4 had the H5 avian influenza virus.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said cleansing and disinfection has been stepped up in the area around Station Lane, although there were no poultry farms nearby.
The spokesman said the department would conduct frequent inspections of poultry farms and the wholesale market to ensure that proper precautions against avian influenza had been implemented.
