Italy: 3 outbreaks of H5 LPAI subtype, summary

Following the identification of H5N2 LPAI virus in Meat turkey holdings in Lombardia Region, Italian Ministry of Health strengthen  the monitoring activities in Veneto, Lombardia, Piemonte and Emilia-Romagna on industrial holdings and commercial farms.
3 outbreaks of H5 LPAI subtype were identified:

Outbreak in Lombardia region: 8/09/2012: the NRL for Avian Influenza confirm virological positivity H5 LPAI subtype in a commercial farm located in Castiglione delle Stiviere municipality (Mantova province). The farm participates at markets in Lombardia and Emilia Romagna Region and as provided by Ministry decree of 25 June 2010 periodical sanitary checks were performed.
• Birds presents in farm
– 25 ducks
– 200 quails
– 2 turkeys
– 5659 laying hens
• Animals shows no clinical signs
• 19/09/2012: the farm was depopulated

 

Outbreak in Veneto region: 24/09/2012 the NRL for Avian Influenza confirm serological positivity H5 LPAI subtype in a Ornamental farm located in Maserada di Piave municipality (Treviso province). Samples test positive also for H7 LPAI. The farm as provided by Ministry Decree of 25 June 2010 was monthly checked.

Outbreak in Veneto region: 28/09/2012: the NRL for Avian Influenza confirm virological positivity H5 LPAI subtype in a commercial farm located in Sona municipality (Verona province). The farm participates at markets in Lombardia and Emilia Romagna Regions as outbreak 2012/0009. The farm as provided by Ministry Decree
of 25 June 2010 was periodically checked.
• Animal introduction: only 1 day-old chicks until they reach commercial size. Birds presents in farm (total 8.600).

• Animals shows no clinical signs
• The outbreak investigation reveals a recent (23/09/2012) participation to a market in Reggio Emilia municipality (Emilia Romagna region).

The farm was depopulated.
