Avian Influenza in Italy: epidemiological situation

Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza-Italy-2012: Epidemiological situation From 01 to 30 Jun 2012 - 1 outbreak of H5 LPAI was detected.
12 Jun 2012: In the frame of national monitoring plan serum samples were collected in a dealer farm located in San Lorenzo del Vallo municipality (Calabria Region). On the 15 of June the NRL confirmed positive results for LPAI Virus subtype H5 on 2 serum samples (HI titre 1:256 -1:128).
Control measures -Depopulation on 21 June 2012. Birds present in 1st farm : 1.300 laying hens.
During May 3 stock of different avian species (chickens, guinea fowls, geese, turkeys) were introduced from a commercial holding located in Salerno province (Campania Region).
•This Region has been involved several times in LPAI incidents.
•Rural and commercial holdings of Calabria Region have frequent trade relations with commercial holdings of Campania Region, this is the most important risk factor of AI virus introduction.
Serological essay (hemagglutinationand neuraminidase-inhibition) performed on sera of outbreak (Calabria and Campania) reveal that infections were caused by the same (antigenically) subtype H5N2.
