H5N1 virus was detected from a faecal swab sample collected from a Daurian Starling at a pet bird shop in the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden (Bird Garden) in Mong Kok.
The faecal swab sample was collected on June 4 for laboratory tests with other swab samples under AFCD's routine avian influenza surveillance programme. As a precautionary measure, The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has temporarily closed the shop in question and removed all its birds, including the Daurian Starling, to the Department’s animal management centre in Sheung Shui for close observation and further testing.
