South Africa: 5 new cases of HPAI

04.07.2011

Ostriches on five new farms in the Western Cape have tested positive for highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza.
Farms tested positive on serology during routine surveillance, but tested negative on PCR and no virus could be found.

The South African Ostrich Business Chamber has said that it will take a while for the sector to recover from the avian influenza outbreak.
More than 20,000 ostriches have been culled since the epidemic was first reported in the Little Karoo in April.
Several birds on a Heidelberg farm also tested positive for Avian Influenza last week.
