Egyptian health authorities reported that the death of 33 people infected with the H5N1 virus since early this year, is almost three times the death toll range registered in 2014. The outbreak of the disease, which first appeared in this country in 2006, already registers 263 cases in 25 of the 27 Egyptian provinces.
The most affected area by the increase of the infection is Sharquiya governorate, north, unlike last year, when the bulk of cases occurred in the south, the poorest part of the country where families rear poultry in backyards to supplement their daily diet. The upward trend has become more apparent in the governorates of Menoufiya and Kafr El Sheikh, located in the delta of the Nile river, north and Fayoum, south. The outbreak seems to be unstoppable despite the outreach campaigns conducted by health authorities, which predict an upward trend until next April.
