Bulgaria's authorities had discovered the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in two dead pelicans in a nature reserve, Srebarna- in northeastern part of the Balkan country, close to neighboring Romania.
This is the second case of avian influenza registered in Bulgaria in the past two months, the first one involving a dead pelican near Burgas at the end of January.
