A chickadee found in Ramsey County is the second wild bird in Minnesota, and the first songbird in the nation, to be confirmed as having highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The chickadee, found in Ramsey County, was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center on June 10, and it later tested positive for an H5 avian influenza virus. The lab was unable to determine if it was the same highly pathogenic H5N2 strain that has devastated commercial poultry farms in Minnesota.
