Avian influenza in South Dakota

02.04.2015

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the presence of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock in Nobles County, Minn., and in a commercial turkey flock in Beadle County, S.D.
The Nobles County flock is the fourth confirmed operation in a commercial flock in Minnesota. The flock of 21,000 turkeys experienced increased mortality, and samples were tested at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and at the APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.
The Beadle County flock of 53,000 turkeys is the first detection in South Dakota and is located within the Central flyway, where this strain of avian influenza has previously been identified and is highly similar to the other H5 HPAI viruses detected this year.
