The conflict continues to seriously disrupt agricultural activities and food markets, according to the FAO-WFP report. Almost five years of conflict have destroyed the Syrian economy and the people's ability to buy essentials like the food they need to survive. Livestock numbers continue to fall. Cattle numbers are estimated to be down by 50-70 percent, sheep and goats by 40 to 50 percent, and commercial poultry by 90 percent; backyard poultry is thought to be down by 50 percent. Only 20 - 30 percent of precrisis poultry units are still functioning.

The report also noted that the country's veterinary service is rapidly running out of vaccines and routine drugs.
Poultry of all livestock, has suffered the greatest reduction in numbers since 2011 with the destruction or abandonment of a great many poultry units which is particularly worrying in view of the role of poultry as a main source of protein of animal origin. At an estimated 13.1 million, the Syrian Arab Republic’s poultry numbers are now at 50 percent of their 2011 level of 26.2 million.
